The rook is the second most powerful piece in chess! Not bad at all, right? But you have to know how to use it to harness its power.
The rook is a major piece that is worth five points in chess. That is two points more than the minor pieces, the knights and bishops. It is only behind the mighty queen, which is worth nine points.
The reason behind the rook’s power lies in the way it moves. It can go up and down the board, as well as left and right. It can go as far as it wants in any of those directions. As you can see, the rook can cover a lot of squares at the same time!
The rook’s only weakness is that it cannot jump over other pieces, like a knight can. That is why rooks like open files, where they have access to jump into action any time they want.
